Day 4–brakes, beer and bed.

Since I was the nominated driver, I had stopped drinking early – but still felt pretty wrecked – probably from all the planking I did the night before.

Nice drive up to Dingle up Conor pass.

Dingle was a bit desolate and not as nice as I remembered it – everything was shut and we wondered around an hour or so before finding a spot for tea.

We then pushed on through more gorgeous scenery through Killarney and up a great road to Molls gap.  More fantastic scenery.

For some reason, possibly as most of the beer was gone, the Metro seemed to be performing great and I managed to catch a Primera, who let me pass, and keep pace with a Golf.  The passengers did seem a bit concerned about my driving on the right though.

Stopped for food and nice town of Kenmare and John took over.

Eventually we hit the Healey pass.

Where John decided to race a bicycle.

This was probably the best bit of road of the rally.  Shortly after a new squeak started and we stopped to find the drivers side front brakes to be cooking.

We let them cool and ploughed on.

Martin took over the driving and when the brakes started squealing again we stopped, took the wheel off and freed the callipers by loosening them and applying a screw driver blade and WD40.

Back in action we ploughed on to the finish – a pretty straight and uneventful drive.

We checked into a B&B for a bit of last night luxury.

After a couple of beers and some chips and curry we went to the finish party – great stuff.  Congrats to all who finished and particularly the winners.

What's this all about?

Not the top gear website but one nothing like it.

Been through a few "what this is" and now settled on my (Stuart McLean's) general blog - mainly about cycling but occasionally anything else chucked in.

I also occasionally write some technical stuff which you can find here.

You can follow me on twitter @stuartm9999.

I record most of my bike rides on runkeeper so you can see them here if you're really bored!
