Competiton has magic powers.

by Stuart 16. July 2010 07:20
Competiton has magic powers. Got set up at camp site yesterday (Thursday) just outside Lille. Barbecued kilo of assorted meat and headed into Lille to register.

Met lots of fellow competitors at bar including guy above who is apparently some dude from Harry Potter and his brother.

Ability to use magic seems a bit unfair but I'm sure our Merc will be spell proof as well as bullet proof.

A couple of beers and usual poker before tent. Up at 6 this morning.

Might have to switch to channel 5

by Stuart 14. April 2010 05:21

Since Messer's Clarkson et al have not yet replied to my request for use of their track and Stig then I might have to look for an alternative show.   Anyone know if 5’th gear have a track?

Enjoy the rain with 1664.

by Stuart 3. April 2010 10:20

image1555362864.jpgFor some reason I don't get Kronenbourg 1664 bottles too often. It's not Mexican or cool, it's French.
But it certainly hits the spot. It's light and refreshing and not sickly sweet in the way Stella bottles are.
Other nice thing about it is it's only 5% so you can still enjoy a rainy morning in Ireland with your family the next day.

Asked top gear for loan of track.

by Stuart 28. March 2010 10:48

Asked top gear for loan of track to test car.  Expect to hear from the soon.

Here’s a copy of the email -

Sirs,

We have recently purchased a 1993 Mercedes 300D to take part in a rally to Barcelona this summer (http://www.wackyrally.co.uk/routeView.php?title=Barmy%20to%20Barcelona%202010&routeId=14).

Some details on the car can be found here - http://www.top-beer.co.uk/.

We were wondering if we could borrow your test track, and possible the Stig, to test the car.

Thanks

Stuart

Gentelman Motorists

by Martin 22. March 2010 05:06

Before the age of Easyjet and KFC, motoring used to be a civilised and relaxing distraction.

The gentleman motorist would pack his barge with an assortment of luxuries and mistresses, board the overnight steamer and waft gaily down to the south of france for a weekends gambling, drinking and infidelity.

Having debauched and gambled all weekend he would then waft rakishly home, beat his children and abuse his wife before returning to work (in the city of course) the following day.

With the advent of cheap travel and cheap tourists everything has changed. orange planes are packed to the gills with orange passengers who then descend upon the beaches and nightspots of Cannes, ruining the whole experience.

The gentleman motorist has ceased to make the trip when the destination is now so orange and ghastly.

Which is a shame.

So, in a bid to relive and revitalise the air of elegant motoring myself and two others will be embarking on such a pan-european expedition.

Thanks to the nice men at Wacky Rally we have our itinerary. Drive and steamer to the continent. Then a sojourn from Lille to Barcelona throuygh mountain passes, peasant villages and, of course, Monte Carlo.

But, what to choose as transport? with a budget of £250 the motoring world was our oyster.

We dismissed the flotsam (divorcee beemers) and jetsam (carinas and corollas) and went for a style icon. an image of elegant motoring. We could have chosen a Rolls or a Bentley but with an air of nouveau-riche covering their sculpted flanks we dismissed them as too vulgar and common.

No, for us it was something more Germanic. a Panzer in a velvet glove. I give you the Mercedes Benz 300d:

(for more pics, have a look here)

Admitedly it has its deficiencies; the electric windows are a tad reluctant, the boot opens with the aid of a screwdeiver, and the interior has a wiff of the farmyard about it but these are all trifles. With our mechanic Stuart to hand all these niggles will pass.

But how is she to drive? like floating on a bed of plump strudel-stuffed pillows. the auto box is quiet and smooth, the ride effortless, the brakes firm and full of feel.

The cornering should be handled in a sedate manner; she is after all a luxury car not some gauche sports medallion. The acceleration is quiet, constant and comforting rather than some vulgar Italian rorty-snorty pitbull of a thing.

But best of all; you arrive at your destination, relaxed and comforted; and the admiring glances? Well, the mechanic has already been subjected to its effects on the fairer sex so we'll need to keep him in check until we depart.

So, with little a spit and polish and some of the mechanics blood sweat and tears, Barcelona here we come.

All i need now is the Harrods hamper and some glasses..

Martin’s beer reviews

by Stuart 8. January 2010 11:48

I’m re publishing Martin’s beer reviews from the old site as a blog.

Chang - Thai Tastyness.

Chang Bottle

Sometimes you need a smooth dark relaxing beer - this is it. Pour it, sit it next to your Red Curry, stick your feet up infront of the Grand Prix and enjoy.

This isn't a quoffing beer - its too heavy for that - it's got a punch like a silk boxing glove - dark, heavy and soothing.

Drink a couple, enjoy, then stop or move on.

Kingfisher

Madras Anyone?

Kingfisher Bottle

Now, do you drink a Kingfisher or a Cobra? Imagine a TOWCers race between a souped up Corsa and a souped up (original) Mini. Ones a loud chav the others got a sense of style and class; but they're botha bit fast and loose.

Kingfishers the Corsa; a bit light and fizzy but a top curry companion. A clean crisp taste and a tangy bite.

Finish the curry and move on, however.

Here me Roar

Tiger Bottle

Like a van driver at a lorry park, this ones a bit odd.

Curry or Chinese?

Worked it out yet?

Both.

Stuff some down and enjoy; love and clean, bit of bite and excellent on a hot day.

Enjoy.

The Ying and The Yang

by Stuart 28. September 2009 12:30

Already written about the great weekend in Majorca.  Also went to London the weekend before but since there was little car involvement – other than hiring a Ford Fiesta – didn’t really write about it.

Anyway  to balance things out I managed to stuff my back in again and have been lying in bed since Thursday.  Pain got so bad on Thursday I rang an ambulance and went into hospital and got wacked with a cocktail of pain killers.  And you know why this happened?

To balance out the enjoyment.

Here’s some more reminders of it sent by Ian.

DSC00065

According to the chirpy brummy who ran reception at this hotel the food was “edible”.  Few of the Top Beer team made it but one reported even the toast was crap.  Still – it was pretty cheap and, other than the toast and the night porters lack of sense of humour and inability to understand French, a top motoring hotel within easy walking distance of two taxi ranks, beach and pizza and beer.

DSC00066

This must be the spot where the team spent most of the first day.  They did mention something about being trapped in a bar.  Apparently they were checking the beech out.

Ideas for site structure

by Stuart 19. March 2009 11:37

OK - starter for 10 on how top beer site will look.

Home page

The presenters

Not JC - guess who this is.

Not James May - that's me

  Not The hamster - CM

Not the stig - not actually discussed at ideas stage in pub in standstead - but really should be either PC Dave as he can actually drive fast or Shamey as his driving is so scarry.

Then the crew

  Everone else.

The Beer

Maybe pages about up and coming/previous Beer trips.

Cars

Reviews of cars we own/like

Blogs

Or - I'm happy to make everyone a presenter.

In terms of admin - I've made marting a site admin too and will make anyone site admin who wants to be - else I'll make you a "Presenter" which means you can update pages but not add new ones or screw about with some of the settings.

You may wish to remain anonymous on site by adopting pseudonyms.

What's this all about?

Not the top gear website but one nothing like it.

Been through a few "what this is" and now settled on my (Stuart McLean's) general blog - mainly about cycling but occasionally anything else chucked in.

I also occasionally write some technical stuff which you can find here.

You can follow me on twitter @stuartm9999.

I record most of my bike rides on runkeeper so you can see them here if you're really bored!
